SBF submits proposals to the government for free and fair elections

Dr. Kamal, President SBF forwarded the proposals to Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Muhammad Ali Durrani following the minister's invitation to give suggestions for making the forthcoming elections fair, free and transparent

In his letter to the minister he said, the denial of rights to choose could lead to serious social and political upheal, a faint example of which was recently witnessed in what is known as Orange Revolution in Ukraine.

He said that meddling in elections by the intelligence agencies must come to an end. The Election Commission should be empowered to pay surprise visits to all monitoring centers setup by military and intelligence agencies, which should also be open to scrutiny and monitoring by civil society organizations. Elections for the Senate should be open or on the principle of priority list of candidates submitted by a party or group on the basis of votes credited to the largest fraction. Approval of the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Judges as members of the commission should be given by the Senate.

He said that the call for suggestions should not be limited only to opposition political parties but should also be extended to individuals and civil society organizations committed to uph0olding democratic principles.
