Peoples Democracy Institute urged United Nations and International Commission of Jurists to help ensure CJ's fair trial

SBF called for the presence of the representatives of international bodies associated with judiciary in the proceedings of the Supreme Judicial Council against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary. The Peoples Democracy Institute, SBF wrote a letter to the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and to the UN Reporters on Judges and Judiciary, urging them to play their role in ensuring the independence of judiciary in Pakistan.

The letter said that the suspension of Chief Justice by General Musharaf is not only unprecedented and unconstitutional but also appears to be politically motivated. Apart from illegally restraining the CJ, the government also appointed an acting CJ as the head of the Supreme Judicial Council in a manner that was not warranted in the Constitution, as the next senior most judge was bypassed on grounds of being not available.

It was emphasized that the CJ must be entitled to all procedural guarantees of a fair hearing, including the right to a public hearing, which he has demanded.
